Testing of the F-35 Lightning II remains on track to start pilot and maintainer training next summer.
Maintainers should get their hands on the F-35 and training equipment in June, Maj. Gen. C.D. Moore, deputy program executive officer for the F-35 program, said Monday at the Air Force Association’s Air and Space Conference near Washington, D.C.
The operational pilots who form the plane’s initial cadre of instructor pilots should begin flying in August 2010.
The first F-35s assigned to the training wing at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., will come from the jet’s first group of production aircraft – planes that aren’t intended for testing.
The wing’s goal is to graduate 186 pilots a year by 2014.
