Air Force captain dies in car accident
Posted : Thursday Jul 16, 2009 9:19:45 EDT
A traffic accident took the life of a captain assigned to Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho.
Capt. Mark Zampogna, 39, died Saturday, July 11, at a Boise hospital from injuries suffered in a July 6 crash on U.S. Highway 95 near Tamarack, about 100 miles north of Boise.
Zampogna was assigned to the 366th Operations Support Squadron, where he oversaw the airfield operations flight, according to the base.
The crash also killed a 35-year-old sheriff’s deputy, Monte “Leroy” Matthews of New Meadows. Zampogna’s wife, Jennifer Zampogna, 35, and their two children, Nicole, 9, and Dominic, 7, were injured in the crash, an Idaho State Police statement said.
Matthews’ sheriff’s cruiser collided with Zampogna’s 2003 Honda Odyssey minivan at about 4:25 p.m., police said. Matthews reportedly crossed into the oncoming traffic lane before colliding with the captain’s Honda.
The crash is under investigation.
Memorial services at Mountain Home are pending, a base spokesman said.
