Defense bill aims to protect N.M. guard wing

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A defense bill approved Thursday by the House of Representatives includes language aimed at protecting the 150th Fighter Wing at Kirtland Air Force Base, N.M.
The language, authored by Rep. Martin Heinrich, D-N.M., would prohibit the Pentagon from retiring planes the unit flies until the Air Force submits a new mission for the wing.
Heinrich says the unit is critical to the nation’s military readiness.
New Mexico National Guard Maj. Gen. Kenny Montoya said in April that the 61-year-old Air National Guard unit known as the “Tacos” would fly its last mission next year because of a Defense Department decision to limit the number of F-22s it buys.
That meant the wing will not be able to use those fighter aircraft to replace its aging F-16C Fighting Falcons.
