Panel says cadet should be restricted to base

AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. — A panel of officers says an Air Force Academy cadet convicted of dereliction of duty for underage drinking should be reprimanded and restricted to the limits of the academy for one month.
Sean Callahan was sentenced Friday after being found guilty of dereliction of duty during a general court-martial the day before. He was acquitted on two other charges: rape and unlawful entry of the alleged victim’s dormitory room.
The academy says the findings and sentence delivered by the court-martial are not final until approved by a convening authority, in this case the academy’s superintendent.
Callahan had been accused of getting drunk, entering a fellow cadet’s room while she slept and sexually assaulting her in August 2007. In October, the woman testified that she didn’t want Callahan prosecuted and called him a “nice guy.”
