Schwartz, Donley to talk nukes with lawmakers

The Air Force’s top leaders will testify on the service’s nuclear enterprise at a closed hearing Wednesday morning before the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense.

Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz and Air Force Secretary Michael Donley are reorganizing the service nuclear units under a new major command. The Air Force plans to stand up Global Strike Command in September.

The realignment will take money, and Hans Kristensen, director of the Nuclear Information Project at the Federation of American Scientists, said he expects the Air Force leaders to ask for Congress for funds.

Schwartz and Donley will be joined by Maj. Gen. C. Donald Alston, assistant chief of staff for strategic deterrence and nuclear integration, and Maj. Gen. Larry O. Spencer, deputy assistant secretary of the Air Force budget.
