FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. — At age 83, Ret. Air Force Col. Bud Day, a former Vietnam cellmate of John McCain’s and a recipient of a Medal of Honor, is taking on a new job.
The Fort Walton Beach attorney will head the Okaloosa County Public Defender’s Office. Day spent much of last year campaigning for McCain. He joined Swift Boat Veterans for Truth in 2004, the group worked to discredit fellow Vietnam veteran John Kerry.
Day says he is looking forward to taking over the 35-employee office.
The Panhandle circuit’s newly elected public defender appointed him to the post.
Day, a former fighter pilot turned lawyer, has devoted much of his legal career to veterans rights including representing numerous Iraq veterans.
