Airman accused of beating dog apologizes

OMAHA, Neb. — An airman accused of beating his dog so badly it had to be euthanized won’t enter a plea yet.

Carson Smith says he’s sorry, and he didn’t mean to kill his dog, Sam. He’s charged with animal cruelty for allegedly clubbing the rat terrier in the head with a golf club in September when it wouldn’t stop barking.

Smith is on active duty in the Air Force and has spent 22 years in the military. His attorney, James Martin Davis, wants to investigate what effect a guilty plea could have on his client’s military standing. At Davis’ request, a Sarpy County judge continued the case until Jan. 16.

If convicted, Smith could face six months in jail.
