Bush taps new maintenance, logistics chief

Staff report
Posted : Wednesday Nov 19, 2008 11:34:24 EST

The commander of the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Center is tapped to become the Air Staff’s top maintenance and logistics officer.

On Tuesday, President Bush nominated Maj. Gen. Loren M. Reno for a third star and appointment as deputy chief of staff for logistics, installations and mission support. Reno’s promotion won’t take effect until he is approved by the Senate.

If he is approved, Reno will replace Lt. Gen. Kevin Sullivan, who retired Nov. 1 after being criticized in a report looking at the Air Force’s handling of nuclear warhead components.

Sullivan, who was commander of the Ogden Logistics Center at Hill Air Force Base, Utah, in 2006 when missile components were mistakenly shipped from Ogden to Taiwan, received a letter of reprimand in September as a result of the report. Five other generals received letters of admonishment. Air Force officials wouldn't specify why he received a more severe penalty than other officers cited in the report.

Reno’s Air Force career began in 1974 as a student navigator. His service focused on C-130 navigator and staff positions until 1987 when he became a maintenance squadron commander.

In addition to Air Force logistics and maintenance posts, Reno served as vice director of the joint Defense Logistics Agency.
