Some troops in Europe test remote voting
Posted : Monday Oct 27, 2008 6:30:13 EDT
About 400 military and other overseas voters who are registered in Okaloosa County, Fla., now can vote at electronic kiosks in Mildenhall, England and Ramstein, Germany, in a pilot project.
The kiosks opened Friday, said Carol Paquette, project manager for the Okaloosa Distance Balloting Pilot Project.
She said she received word that the first voter had voted in Mildenhall and all went well.
A kiosk is planned for Japan, but officials are still working out some details, she said.
The Mildenhall electronic voting kiosk is at the Riverside Hotel on 17 Mill Street; the Ramstein kiosk is at the Ramsteiner Hof hotel. They will be open through Nov. 2.
Hours are from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, except for Nov. 2, when the kiosks will be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The pilot project is being conducted by Operation BRAVO in partnership with the supervisor of elections of Okaloosa County.
Operation BRAVO is exploring and developing practical electronic solutions to significantly improve the overseas absentee voting process.
