12,205 find out they can sew on a new stripe

Rev up your sewing machines — 12,205 senior airmen learned Wednesday that they’ll move up to staff sergeant this year.

Based on the selection list released at 9 a.m. Eastern time Wednesday, airmen will start sewing on staff sergeant stripes in September and continue doing so through next August.

When an airman sews on is determined by time in service and how long the airman has been a senior airman. The preference goes to the longest-serving airmen.

The promotion rate is 43.45 percent, up from 41.33 last year. However, this year’s number of airmen selected is down from last year, when more than 15,000 were picked.

For this year’s staff-selects, average time in grade is 2.25 years and time in service is 4.85 years. The average score for those selected this year was 268.39.
