Forest fire burns 3-4 acres at academy

A forest fire in a remote area of the Air Force Academy installation burned three to four acres of brush and trees Saturday before being extinguished by Air Force and civilian firefighters.

The fire was reported at about 10:30 a.m. and was out about an hour later, said academy spokesman Master Sgt. Dean Miller.

Six academy fire trucks, as well as civilian firefighters, responded to the blaze, he said, which was in a remote part of the Jack’s Valley training area, just north of the main part of the academy installation.

Cadets involved in global engagement training were in the area, but no one was hurt or evacuated. The cadets helped secure the area while firefighters battled the blaze, Miller said.

There are no structures in the area, he said, and the only damage was to vegetation.
