Posted : Thursday May 8, 2008 8:43:22 EDT
POPE AIR FORCE BASE, N.C. — A new commander has been installed at the Air Force base that is home to the planes that haul paratroopers and special operation troops from neighboring Fort Bragg.
The Fayetteville Observer reports Col. John W. McDonald officially took over Tuesday from Col. Timothy M. Zadalis as commander of the 43rd Airlift Wing at Pope Air Force Base.
McDonald is a C-130 cargo plane navigator and is the son of an Air Force chief master sergeant.
He promised in his speech to base personnel and generals from Fort Bragg to continue smooth operations for local parachute training and overseas deployments.
Pope is scheduled to become an Army airfield by 2011 as part of a national base realignment plan.
Zadalis has been nominated for promotion to brigadier general and is scheduled to become commander of the 21st Expeditionary Mobility Task Force at McGuire Air Force Base, N.J.
