Damaged goods claims can now be filed online
Posted : Friday May 16, 2008 9:52:42 EDT
Airmen may now use an online form rather than paper to report household goods that are lost, damaged or destroyed in an official move.
The new online DD Form 1840 — the well-known “pink form” — is available electronically at https://claims.jag.af.mil. The online form went live Thursday.
You will still receive a paper DD Form 1840 when the commercial carrier delivers your moving shipment, and you still have 70 days to document any damaged or missing items. But instead of filling out the back of the paper pink form and submitting it to your base legal office, you may now enter the information in the online form.
This notifies the carrier that you will be filing a damage claim. The Air Force will forward the information to the carrier that delivered the shipment.
The moving company should also give you information telling you how to file damage claims with the company. Under a new Defense Department policy, airmen will receive full replacement value rather than a depreciated value for damaged or lost goods, but they must file with the moving company rather than the Air Force.
You have nine months from the date of delivery to file your claim.
If airmen miss the nine-month deadline to file with the carrier, they’ll still be able to file with the Air Force to get a depreciated value reimbursement. Those claims must be filed within two years of the shipment’s delivery date.
If there are problems with the new online form or the claims process, airmen can call the Air Force Claims Service Center at (877) 754-1212 or DSN 986-8044. The center is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
