DES MOINES, Iowa — About 250 members of an Iowa Air National Guard unit from Des Moines are going to Iraq.
Military officials have confirmed that the members of the 132nd Fighter Wing will be deployed to support combat troops, according to the Des Moines Register.
Lt. Col. James Freese, the wing’s executive officer, said the airmen will launch F-16 aircraft to attack enemy forces and search for roadside bombs.
Most of the airmen will leave in about a week. They will spend about two months in the Persian Gulf region. Freese declined to give specific details about the mission, citing security.
Air Force spokesman Col. Mary Ellen Jadick said the Iowa unit will serve the 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing, the only Air Force wing in Iraq.
