Wednesday marked the 100th anniversary of the New York Air National Guard’s 106th Rescue Wing.
The First Company, Signal Corps — the predecessor to the 106th — held its first training session April 30, 1908. The 100-man unit belonged to the 71st Regiment and piloted observation balloons. Today, the unit flies HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopters and HC-130N Hercules surveillance planes.
Notable events in the unit’s history include being first on the scene of the TWA Flight 800 crash after the passenger plane blew up over Long Island in 1996. The unit also featured the ANG’s first female member, Capt. Norma Parsons, who joined in July 1956. In 1998, the unit conducted the longest-ever over-water rescue mission.
