Air Force nears 1 million sorties since 9/11
Posted : Friday Apr 18, 2008 9:31:12 EDT
The Air Force expects to fly its one millionth post-Sept. 11 sortie by April 21, with Operation Iraqi Freedom accounting for more than 35 percent of all missions.
With more than 300 flights daily in Iraq, Afghanistan and surrounding areas, the milestone could come a day earlier with just a slight uptick in operational tempo. Roughly 200 of those daily flights are tied to Operation Iraqi Freedom.
As of April 1, nearly 353,000 sorties had been flown in Operation Iraqi Freedom, nearly 194,000 sorties had been flown for Operation Enduring Freedom and nearly 51,000 had been flown for Operation Noble Eagle, the efforts to prevent terrorism in the U.S. About 394,000 supporting airlift missions also had been flown
In total, as of April 1, the sorties from these operations — considered part of the “Global War on Terror” — numbered 991,172.
