B-1 to fly with synthetic fuel Wednesday
Posted : Wednesday Mar 19, 2008 13:23:20 EDT
An Air Force B-1 bomber will make the first supersonic flight Wednesday powered by a 50/50 synthetic fuel blend, the service announced in a press release.
The Lancer will run on a blend of jet fuel and fuel derived from the Fischer-Tropsch process, which converts coal or natural gas into a clean diesel alternative. All four of the plane’s engines will run on the fuel blend during the four-hour flight out of Dyess Air Force Base, Texas, Air Force spokeswoman Vicki Stein said.
The B-52 is already certified to run on the fuel blend, and the C-17 has undergone testing, including a Dec. 17 cross-country flight. The Air Force’s goal is to certify all its airframes on the fuel blend by 2011, and to run all flights on the blend by 2016.
