1,200 O-3s, O-4s to get word on their future
Posted : Tuesday Jul 24, 2007 20:21:03 EDT
Almost 1,200 captains and majors will learn Wednesday if they are among the officers being told to leave the active-duty Air Force.
At bases across the world, senior officers will meet individually with 306 officers who were picked by the Reduction in Force Board that met in June at the Air Force Personnel Center, Randolph Air Force Base, Texas. In broad categories, the officers being told to leave include 54 majors commissioned in 1995, 38 majors commissioned in 1996, 70 captains commissioned in 2000 and 144 captains commissioned in 2001.
The career field taking most cuts: communications/information officer — the 33S specialty code — where 94 officers will get bad news. Other affected career fields included aircraft maintenance, personnel/manpower, missile maintenance, finance, acquisition management, public affairs and scientist.
Because board’s decisions are considered a private personnel matter between the selected officers and the Air Force, the service will not release the names of the 306 airmen chosen by the board.
Officers will not be able to ask for reconsideration other than filing an appeal with the Air Force Board for Correction of Military Records.
Most will have until Jan. 29 to leave the service.
Officers who want to stay in the military can apply to join the Army, the Guard or reserve.
The board didn’t meet the officers in person. Instead, its members considered a retention recommendation form containing comments about each officer’s performance and retention potential, and a specific “retain” or “separate” suggestion from the officer’s senior rater.
The board also had access to officer performance reports, training reports, decoration citations, an officer selection brief listing service dates, duty assignment and other demographic information, and a letter to the board from the officer.
