Academy holds debate on God in the military
Posted : Tuesday Apr 17, 2007 11:27:15 EDT
Attorney Mikey Weinstein, an Air Force Academy graduate who heads a national campaign to end proselytizing in the military, will be back at the academy April 24 to debate attorney Jay Sekulow of the American Center for Law and Justice, the academy announced Tuesday.
The ACLJ has supported military chaplains who insist they be allowed to invoke Jesus’ name in prayer, and sponsors a petition asking President Bush to issue an executive order that would let them pray according to their conscience.
Weinstein, author of “With God On Our Side: One Man’s War Against an Evangelical Coup in America’s Military,” leads the Military Religious Freedom Foundation.
The topic of the debate will be, “What is the appropriate balance between religious freedom and official neutrality in the military?”
