4 bases vie to be KC-X home

Four Air Force bases are in contention to host the service’s new tanker currently in development, Sen. Kent Conrad, D–N.D., told the Grand Forks (N.D.) Herald.

Conrad told the newspaper that Chief of Staff Gen. T. Michael Moseley is considering locating the KC-X tanker at Grand Forks Air Force Base, N.D.; MacDill Air Force Base, Fla.; McConnell Air Force Base, Kan.; or Fairchild Air Force Base, Wash.

Boeing and a Northrop Grumman-EADS team are competing for the $40 billion contract, and the Air Force is expected to choose a winner in October.

Current plans call for the Air Force to buy 179 tankers, with the first to be delivered in 2011.
