Weather Channel program to focus on AF forecasters
By Bruce Rolfsen
Times staff writer
The role of Air Force weather forecasters in the opening weeks of Operation Iraqi Freedom is the focus of a Weather Channel special airing Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET.
“Battlefield Iraq: Combating the Weather” tells the story of how Air Force weathermen worked with special operations and conventional forces to predict weather conditions during the invasion. The special is part of the Weather Channel’s “Storm Stories” series.
In one case, Staff Sgt. Charles Rushing crept onto an island off the Iraqi coast five days before the invasion to study surf and fog trends.
Other forecasters profiled include airmen who moved forward into Iraq with the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division and those at the 28th Operational Weather Squadron, headquartered at Shaw Air Force Base, S.C., who coordinated forecasts for the region.
