Child custody
It’s not about what is fair to the service member, it’s about what is best for the kids. And it seems to me, being in a home where your one parent deploys for 12-15 months is not in the best interest of the children, all other factors being equal. So, not only does it not surprise me that you could lose custody of your children while on or because of a deployment, it is probably the right thing to do in many situations.

Enlisted UAV pilots
Clearly UAVs can be flown by enlisted. The Army has a “can do” mentality, whereas the Air Force seems stuck in its culture and mind-set. The Air Force may be the youngest service, but it is the most outdated.

F.E. Warren missile wing fails nuke inspection
These inspections are such a farce. Has anybody ever asked what happens when a missile wing fails an inspection? Aside from the pain caused to the troops as they continue in “inspection mode” times 10 for another 90 days until the re-inspection, nothing happens. Lt. Gen. Kehler said that he “allowed the wing to keep their certification.” Well, of course! You don’t think they’re going to shut down capsules, do you? So what does it really mean to fail an NSI?

From classrooms to combatives, AETC chief outlines changes
As for the combatives, everybody should have some sort training it. I’m in a career field that actually needs combatives, and it’s not a cop. Combatives provide great training for lots of situations, disarming somebody or just defending yourself in a scuffle. It should be in BMT.

Take nuclear missiles off ‘knee-jerk’ alert
I think that would be the biggest complaint for all missileers — the lack of gratification, the lack of “glory.” We all need to have a sense of purpose, like what we’re doing really means something. In the monotonous, “Groundhog Day” lives of the missileer, it’s easy to lose sight of the fact that we really are doing something important. However, I would agree that our threat really isn’t from the “big” countries. Our threat is from the insurgents and terrorists who aren’t associated with any individual country. Our ICBMs aren’t worth a damn in protecting us from them.

Who do you think deters the big nations from mischief and frees the necessary convention forces to handle the terrorists? With the military at its smallest size in decades, you need the nuclear deterrence even more.
