Other pay: Prorated Special and Incentive Pays

The 2010 Defense Authorization Act makes a change in the way special and incentive pays are paid.

Monthly hostile fire pay, imminent danger pay, hazardous duty pay, assignment incentive pay and special duty pays will be pro-rated to reflect the actual number of days in a month that a service member peforms qualifying service. Previously, a member would draw a full month of pay even if they performed the qualifying duty for only one day in that month. The new policy could substantially reduce payments for some people.

The effective date is Oct. 28, 2009, but at press time the Defense Department had not issued new implementing regulations.
