Moving: Stop-Movement

The stop-movement program is a tool that each service can use to keep members in place by suspending permanent change-of-station moves and some temporary duty assignments.

The program has been used during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to maintain troop strength and readiness, but it also has been used to prevent service members from entering harm’s way after a natural disaster.

The Air Force, for example, has sometimes used stop-movement orders in Gulf Coast states when hurricanes were expected to hit those regions. Although the orders prevented members from moving to new duty stations, it also prevented families from moving into areas affected by heavy rains and wind.
