FORT HUACHUCA, ARIZ. — An Arizona Department of Public Safety helicopter crew rescued a Fort Huachuca soldier who got stranded while climbing in a canyon in the Huachuca Mountains near Sierra Vista.

The Cochise County Sheriff’s Office said the unidentified soldier was hiking with another soldier in Huachuca Canyon on Sunday when he got stuck on a rock face about 150 feet high.

Search and rescue personnel and a DPS helicopter based in Tucson responded to a call for help.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the helicopter crew located the stranded soldier, was able to hover near him, assisted him into the helicopter and flew him to the rescue effort’s command post.

The soldier was released after medics checked him.
