PIEDMONT, S.D. — Officials at the Ellsworth Air Force Base and nearby communities say residents should not drink or use the local water for several days unless it’s first boiled.
Officials have issued a boil water order for the base, the Antelope Ridge housing community and Vandenberg Elementary.
KELO-TV reports that an on-base water sample exceeded the E. Coli standard. The bacteria can make a person sick, especially those with weakened immune systems.
Water should not be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes or food preparation until further notice. Water should be brought to a boil for at least one minute and allowed to cool before using.
Base officials will be closing down some housing in Prairie View Estates to fix the issue as soon as possible.
