KEESLER AIR FORCE BASE, MISS. — Keesler Air Force Base’s neighbors may have to get used to a new nightly ritual.

Every night at 9 p.m., Keesler will play taps base-wide over its public-address system.

Taps was first played during the Civil War era to signify lights out and is still played nightly at non-deployed military installations across the globe at the end of each day.

Keesler has decided to pick up the routine in perpetuity.

81st Training Wing spokesman TSgt. Greg Biondo tells The Sun Herald taps has always been played on the training portion of the base but now it will be played base-wide.

Base officials say some off-base neighbors may be able to hear the music and they apologize for the inconvenience.
