An F/A-18E Super Hornet crashed into the water off the coast of southern California on Wednesday night during an approach to the aircraft carrier Carl Vinson, according to a Thursday release from Naval Air Force Pacific.

The pilot was recovered after safely ejecting from the jet and was in stable condition aboard the Carl Vinson on Thursday morning, the release said. The aircraft, assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron 81 at Naval Air Station Oceana, Virginia, hasn’t been recovered.

Air operations aboard the carrier have been suspended, the release said. The rest of the squadron were diverted to Naval Air Station North Island in Coronado, California, late Wednesday night.

The Carl Vinson is underway with embarked Carrier Air Wing 17, conducting Joint Task Force Exercise in preparation for the Vinson Carrier Strike Group’s upcoming deployment.

The Navy will carry out an investigation into the cause of the mishap, the release said.

It was the second military aircraft crash in the California area Wednesday. In the afternoon, a Marine Harrier jet crashed in flames in a residential area of Imperial but no one was hurt. The pilot safely ejected and no one on the ground was injured.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
