The Air Force has selected 4,073 technical sergeants for promotion to master sergeant in the toughest year in more than a decade.

That represents more selectees than the 3,841 who were tapped for master sergeant last year, but competition has grown even stiffer. This year, 17.96 percent of the 22,673 eligible tech sergeants were selected for promotion. That is well below the 18.71 percent selection rate in 2013, which itself was the lowest since at least 2000.

E-7 promotion rates are now less than half what they were in 2000, when 39.11 percent of eligible tech sergeants were promoted to master sergeant.

The average overall score for selectees was 352.55, the Air Force Personnel Center said in a Thursday release. That is higher than the 350.21 average overall score for selectees last year.

Selectees’ average time in grade this year was 4.41, up slightly from the average 4.38 from last year. But this year’s average time in service was 15.16, down a bit from the 15.27 last year.

The average enlisted performance report score was 133.98, average decorations score was 11.66, and the average skills knowledge test score was 71.49. Those scores are all up from last year’s scores of 133.85, 11.02, and 68.43, respectively.

But this year’s average promotion fitness examination score of 69.13 was down considerably from the average 82.76 score in 2013. It is closer to the 69.71 average PFE score in 2012.

Selections are tentative until the data is verified, which usually happens within 10 days of promotion announcements.
