WASHINGTON — President Obama will deliver this year’s commencement address at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point on May 28, the White House announced Monday.

“More than 1,000 cadets are expected to graduate and be commissioned as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army after completing their 47-month leadership experience, and the president looks forward to addressing these outstanding graduates,” spokesman Keith Maley said.

Obama also delivered the commencement address at West Point in 2010.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel delivered last year’s commencement address at the military academy.

The ceremony includes a traditional hat toss by graduating cadets that dates back to 1946. The first graduating class in 1802 had only two people, according to the Army.

The lowest-ranking member of the graduating class, referred to as The Goat, traditionally receives the loudest applause from classmates, according to the official U.S. Army blog.

In 2013, Obama delivered commencement addresses at the U.S. Naval Academy, all-male, historically black Morehouse College and Ohio State University.

In 2012, he addressed graduates at the Air Force Academy, Barnard College in Manhattan and Joplin High School in Joplin, Mo.

This year, Obama also will deliver commencement speeches at Worcester Technical High School in Worcester, Mass., on June 11 and the University of California, Irvine, on June 14.
