May will be big month for officers to move up

May will be a banner month for officer promotions with nearly 2,100 first lieutenants of the basic and special branches pinning on the silver tracks of captain.

The May promotion plan authorizes 2,699 advancements to the ranks of captain through colonel and the three senior chief warrant officer grades.

The monthly authorization is the biggest since June 2012 when nearly 3,400 officers were promoted. Captain advancements accounted for 77 percent of those promotions, just as they will in May.

The 2,097 first lieutenants advancing to captain May 1 will be hitting the fourth anniversary of their commissioning from West Point and Reserve Officer Training Corps schools.

Under a plan announced two years ago, the Army has been lengthening the average pin-on point for captain from slightly more than three years to 48 months, the standard wait time for O-3 before the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Within the Army Competitive Category, there will be 49 promotions to colonel, 86 to lieutenant colonel, 133 to major, 1,967 to captain, five to CW5, 32 to CW4 and 67 to CW3.

Those promotions will complete the 2013 ACC lieutenant colonel list. A new list compiled by a board that met in January and February is pending release and Senate confirmation.

May promotions also will reduce the 2013 senior chief warrant officer selection lists to fewer than 100 names each. New lists will be compiled by a board that meets April 22-May 7.

Special branches promotions in June will include 23 advancements to colonel, 37 to lieutenant colonel and 59 to major for the Medical Corps.

Within the Medical Service Corps, there will be three promotions to colonel, 47 to major and 98 to captain.

Promotions to lieutenant colonel for the Medical Service Corps, Medical Specialist Corps, Veterinary Corps and Nurse Corps are on hold until results of the Army Medical Department board that met in January and early February are released.
