Tech. Sgt. Bobby Bass (Air Force)
Staff Sgt. Annamarie Ellis
The case: Former basic trainees under Ellis in 2010 and 2011 accused her of threatening to beat them up, send them home in body bags and other violent acts, the San Antonio Express-News reported. Ellis also allegedly instigated a fight that left one trainee with a black eye, ordered trainees to work out naked in the shower and mishandled their mail. The allegations arose during a sweeping investigation of basic training in 2011 and 2012 that has led to two dozen other MTI courts-martial. Ellis’ case is considered separate because she is not accused of any sexual offenses.
The charges: Twenty-four specifications of dereliction of duty and maltraining, cruel and oppressive treatment and obstruction.
The verdict: Ellis pleaded guilty to all charges.
The sentence: Eight months confinement, reduction to E-1 and a bad conduct discharge.
Tech. Sgt. Bobby Bass
The case: In 2012, former trainees from 2009 accused Bass of ordering them to perform humiliating and painful tasks, including physical training in an overheated bathroom; bending over naked in a shower crowded with dozens of recruits, and rubbing muscle cream on their genitals. None of the trainees reported the abuses at the time. Investigators sought them out after an airman accused Bass of sodomy during an overseas deployment.
The charges: Forcible sodomy; 11 specifications of dereliction of duty and failure to obey a lawful order; 16 specifications of cruelty and maltreatment; two specifications of wrongful sexual contact and four specifications of assault. All of the charges except forcible sodomy stemmed from Bass’ time as a basic training instructor.
The verdict: A military jury on April 24, 2013, found Bass guilty of all specifications of dereliction of duty, failure to obey a lawful order, wrongful sexual contact and abuse, and 13 of 16 specifications of cruelty and maltreatment. He was found not guilty of forcible sodomy and also cleared of three specifications of cruelty and maltreatment of trainees.
The sentence: Six months in jail, reduction to staff sergeant and forfeiture of $1,000 a month for three months.
