Air Force Command Chief Master Sgt. Jack Johnson Jr. has been selected as the senior enlisted leader for Supreme Allied Command Transformation in Norfolk, Va.

The move was announced on Friday by the office of Marine Sgt. Maj. Bryan Battaglia, senior enlisted adviser to the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Johnson is currently assigned to Air Force headquarters in Washington.

“All the applicants who competed for this position were exceptionally qualified and maintain a remarkable record and reputation in the U.S. Armed Forces,” Battaglia said in enamil on Monday. “In the end, the Supreme Allied Commander General Jean Paul Palemeros chose Chief Johnson for his upcoming role.”

In addition to assuming responsibility for the morale of enlisted service members, Johnson’s responsibilities will include overseeing and assessing traning, education standards, and modernization and development NATO nations’ militaries, Battaglia said.

“Chief Johnson is a highly-qualified senior leader capable of providing sage advice and candid feedback with sustaining NATO’s longstanding commitment to the 28-member alliance,” Battaglia said.

Johnson joined the Air Force in 1984. Prior to his assignment in Washington, he served as senior enlisted leader for U.S. Africa Command from March 2011 to July 2013. He holds a bachelor’s degree in global business management and a master’s degree in security management.

He served as first sergeant in six assignments and then served as First Sergeant Special Duty Manager from May 2005 and March 2007. His military awards include the Legion of Merit Award and Defense Meritorious Service Medal.

Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force James Cody said Johnson is “exceptionally qualified” for the new assignment.

“Chief Johnson is a leader amongst leaders, an Airman who connects with troops, regardless of service or nation,” Cody said in an email. “I’m confident he’ll serve the command with distinction and honor; we are excited and very proud of his selection.”

One retired command chief master sergeant who has worked with Johnson was elated at the news about Johnson’s new position.

“Jack Johnson is the airman’s airman,” said Steph Page, who retired in 2009. “His selection to that particular position is an absolute touchdown.”

Page has known Johnson for close to a decade and says he is well-suited for his new job.

“He brings commitment; he brings loyalty; he brings passion; and he brings a plethora of experience,” Page said.
