The Air Force is investigating the cause of death of a basic trainee who collapsed Thursday during physical training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland.

Terron Moore, 19, was transported about 5 p.m. to Southwest General Hospital, according to a base news release. He died at 9:40 p.m.

“This is a tragic event and the men and women of the 37th Training Wing are grieving the loss of a fellow airman,” said Col. Mark Camerer, 37th Training Wing commander. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this very difficult time.”

Moore collapsed at the end of a 1.5-mile run, which is part of recruits’ regular physical training, said Air Force spokeswoman Collen McGee.

Moore was from Fort Wayne, Ind., McGee said.

Grief counselors and chaplains were being made available to Moore’s flight members and basic training instructors, the news release said.

In October 2011, 26-year-old basic trainee Steven Williams, died after collapsing during a physical training test that was part of a fitness evaluation required for graduation from basic training. Williams’ death was ultimately attributed to a medical condition.
