CID: Accidental fall may have killed Fort Sam Houston soldier

SAN ANTONIO — Investigators say a South Texas soldier who was found in a stairwell outside his barracks may have died in an accidental fall.

Officials at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston on Monday identified the soldier as 28-year-old Spec. Ian Patrick Morgan. Morgan, who was discovered by fellow soldiers early Sunday and pronounced dead at San Antonio Military Medical Center, was from the Tonawanda, N.Y., according to the San-Antonio Express-News.

“At this point in the investigation, we do not suspect foul play and see no signs of foul play, although we have not completely ruled it out in order to conduct a complete and thorough investigation,” said Chris Grey, the spokesperson for Army Criminal Investigation Command, said in a press release on Tuesday.

Although a final determination has not been made and the investigation is continuing, early indications are the death was the result of an accidental fall, according to Grey.

CID does not typically release preliminary information in its investigations. In this case, the press release follows news accounts suggesting Morgan’s death was a homicide.

Morgan’s adoptive parents told they adopted him as a teen and helped him overcome an addiction to painkillers, turning his life around, the Express-News reported.

They reportedly said Morgan had suffered a three-story fall at a South Korea nightclub and had since recovered, but he turned to alcohol as he dealt with the pain. He was reportedly in counseling.

“He was fun, had a great sense of humor, an infectious laugh, an all-around great heart,” his stepfather, Robert Anderson Sr., told the newspaper. “He was someone you wouldn't have to worry about being a troublemaker or stirring up a bunch of chaos in others' life.”

Morgan was assigned to U.S. Army North headquarters, 56th Signal Co.
