TACOMA, WASH. — The Pierce County prosecutor has charged a Puyallup, Wash., man with second-degree murder in the stabbing death of a Joint Base Lewis-McChord soldier who intervened when a woman was being attacked.

The News Tribune says 29-year-old Chase Devyver pleaded not guilty Tuesday to that count and related charges. He was held on $2 million bail.

In court papers, prosecutors say Devyver, his girlfriend, Sgt. 1st Class Shawn Woods and another woman went out drinking before returning to a home early Sunday. Devyver and his girlfriend reportedly sat outside in a car arguing for some time while Woods and the other woman went inside.

When the girlfriend walked to the house, Devyver is accused of stabbing her. Prosecutors say Woods went to help her and was fatally stabbed.

The Army says the 38-year-old Woods was from Cedar Hill, Tenn.
