Capt. Robby Williams did not report to work Dec. 23 at Shaw Air Force Base, S.C., and is now considered a deserter, the Office of Special Investigations says. ()

A Shaw Air Force Base, S.C., captain who went missing last month is considered a deserter, the Air Force Office of Special Investigations said Thursday.

Capt. Robby Williams did not report to work at Shaw on Dec. 23. Since then, he “has been eluding authorities involved in his search,” according to an OSI news release. “He has been traveling and staying in hotels and motels” in South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia.

OSI said Williams was seen purchasing large amounts of alcohol and has used the alias “Robby Lawton.”

Williams was most recently reported being seen Jan. 7 in Waco, Ga., OSI said. He was driving his 2013 black Jeep Wrangler with the South Carolina license plate number ITC701.

He is thought to be traveling along major highways in the southeastern U.S., and is not presumed to be armed or dangerous “at this time,” the news release said.

The Air Force had previously asked for help finding Williams, who had been stationed at Shaw since November, but did not describe him as a deserter.

“We’re all trying to find Robby now,” Brig. Gen. Scott Dennis, U.S. Air Forces Central Command assistant commanding deputy, said in a Dec. 31 news release. “Robby is a member of our team and a part of the Air Force family. We’d like the community’s help in reporting and tips they may have to the local authorities.”

Williams is described as an African American in his late 20s who stands 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighs 190 pounds, and has brown hair and brown eyes, OSI said.

The Air Force asks anyone with information about his whereabouts to call local law enforcement or OSI at (571) 305-8484 or text ‘AFOSI’ and the tip to 274637 (CRIMES). Tips can also be submitted online at
