Congressman calls for U.S. air support in Iraq

A congressman who also is an Air National Guardsman is calling for the Air Force to begin again its fight in Iraq.

Rep Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., said on the House floor Tuesday that the U.S. needs to use “limited air power” in Iraq to help its fight against al-Qaida.

“It is not too late to reverse the tragic foreign policy consequences [of] what we’ve seen in the Middle East. … This has to be done today; this has to be done now,” Kinzinger said. “The blood Americans have sacrificed for a free Iraq and a free Afghanistan — we cannot let that sacrifice be in vain.”

Al-Qaida fighters have taken over major cities in Anbar province, including Fallujah. The Pentagon said Monday that the U.S. is accelerating the delivery of 100 Hellfire missiles and 10 ScanEagle drones to assist with battles against the militants. But it said there would be no American troops on the ground.

Kinzinger, a major in the Guard who flew missions in Iraq and Afghanistan as a KC-135 pilot, said recent events in Iraq show “that our allies no longer trust us and our enemies no longer fear us.”
