The top enlisted man aboard a Japan-based amphibious ship was removed from his position Tuesday as the Navy investigates allegations of sexual assault made by a female enlisted member of the ship's crew, the service announced.

Command Master Chief (SW/AW) Jesus Galura of the dock landing ship Germantown has been temporarily reassigned to Amphibious Squadron 11 by Capt. Heidi Agle, commodore of the squadron, the Navy said in a news release. Agle "determined the investigation would negatively affect Galura's leadership ability and would be an unnecessary distraction to the command mission," the release states.

CMC Jeffrey Steinly will take over Galura's duties on an interim basis. Steinly had been serving with Pacific Fleet headquarters.

The Navy did not provide any details on the allegations or the accuser, citing the ongoing investigation. An email seeking comment from a spokesman with Amphibious Force 7th Fleet wasn't immediately returned.

Galura took over as CMC of the forward-deployed Germantown in August 2011, according to the release. He joined the Navy in 1989, according to his official online bio; early tours of duty included a stop aboard Germantown in the early 1990s, followed by time aboard the amphibious assault ship Essex, also stationed in Japan.

Galura then served as an instructor at Great Lakes, Ill., before returning to Japan to serve aboard the amphibious transport dock Denver, including a stint filling the CMC billet, according to his bio. His honors include five Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals and six Navy Good Conduct Medal, along with a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
