Kaplan University is offering associate degrees to trained military medics after just four or five online classes. The duration of the degree program depends on a service member’s military job, how many classes are taken at a time and whether a troop is active-duty or a reservist, said school spokesman Brian Sayler. Some service members complete the degrees in as little as five months, he said. “We’re not trying to give people a shortcut to a degree in terms of the rigor,” Sayler said. “These guys have done an extraordinary amount of clinicals and field training. ... It’s certainly worthwhile for the service member to count all of that training.” Schools across the country follow guidelines set by the American Council on Education regarding what credit should be given for what types of military training. The credit offered in Kaplan’s program goes beyond what ACE recommends for such medical training. Sayler said Kaplan has done its own analysis of how military training should count toward the degree. In addition to the Associate of Science in Health Science degree, Kaplan has set up a similar procedure for service members to earn an Associate of Applied Science in Business Administration in as little as eight courses, Sayler said. “It’s something that we’re going to continue to do and continue to expand into other programs, because it’s the right thing to do for the student.”
