Malmstrom airman dies while lifting weights

Senior Airman Vincent Sanchez, a security forces journeyman, from Downey, Calif., and assigned to Malmstrom Air Force Base died Sunday after collapsing while weightlifting.

Sanchez, assigned to the 341st Missile Security Forces Squadron, was working out while on duty at a missile alert facility. The member was provided aide on the scene, however, died at approximately 5:25 p.m., before being transported to Lewistown hospital.

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of an invaluable member of Wing One,” said Col. Robert Stanley, 341st Missile Wing commander.

“We will take every step we can to ensure those affected by the death of Senior Airman Sanchez receive the support they need in this time of sadness.”

Sanchez, 23, entered duty Dec. 15, 2009, and arrived here July 5, 2010.

Sanchez’s awards while on active duty included: Air Force Training Ribbon, Air Force Good Conduct Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, and the Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon.

The incident is currently under investigation.
