The Air Force is dropping 46 career fields from the list of jobs eligible for selective re-enlistment bonuses and airmen in those fields have only until Dec. 4 to sign up again and still get a bonus.
Airmen previously had 30 days to re-enlist and still receive a bonus after their career fields were dropped from the SRB list, but the Air Force said in a Nov. 26 release that Defense Department policy has changed. Airmen now have eight calendar days to re-enlist and still get the bonus.
Brig. Gen. Gina Grosso, the Air Forces director of force management policy, said the eligibility changes are helping the Air Force prepare for a smaller force, due to the sequester.
The SRB program is a retention tool, Grosso said in the Nov. 26 release. As the force gets smaller, skills that were undermanned are no longer short and we are adjusting the bonus program accordingly.
Re-enlistment bonuses are still needed for critical and emerging career fields with high operations demands and low manning, such as battlefield airmen and airmen with cyberspace specialties, Grosso said.
The Air Force said 10 career fields airborne cryptologic language analysts; airborne intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance operators; cyberspace defense operations; combat control airmen; tactical air control party; fusion analysts and digital network analysts; survival, evasion, resistance and escape airmen; pararescue airmen; special operations weather airmen; and explosive ordnance disposal airmen will still be eligible for bonuses as of Dec. 5.
