A squadron XO has been fired after receiving a citation for drunken driving, Naval Air Forces Atlantic reported Friday night.

Cmdr. Samuel Tanner was executive officer of Strike Fighter Squadron 34, based at Naval Air Station Oceana, Va. The firing decision came immediately after non-judicial punishment proceedings, a Navy news release stated. Capt. Christopher Murdoch, the commander of Carrier Air Wing 2, made the decision to fire Tanner, who has been temporarily assigned to the staff of Commander, Strike Fighter Wing Atlantic.

During captainís mast, Tanner was found in violation of Article 111 of the Uniformed Code of Military Justice, Drunken Operation of a Motor Vehicle. The drunken driving incident occurred Nov. 15 at Naval Base Coronado, Calif., according to the release. Tanner was cited by a security patrolman on duty.

The squadron was in California at the time of the incident, conducting training at Naval Air Station North Island, the news release stated.

Tanner, a native of McDonough, Ga., completed Officer Candidate School in Pensacola and earned his wings in 1998. He was selected to fly the S-3B Viking and he served in Sea Control Squadrons 31 and 41 before transitioning to the F/A-18C, according to his official bio. He served as part of VFA-81 and VFA-15 and then, in 2010, began working as the joint lessons learned program director under the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In 2012, he reported to the Blue Blasters of VFA-34 to serve as the XO. He has logged more than 3,200 flight hours and completed more than 780 arrested landings. Attempts to reach him for comment through a public affairs officer were not immediately successful.
