The attack submarine Dallas is coming home for the holidays — and for good, following its final deployment after more than 30 years in service.

The sub’s 140 sailors are due back in Groton, Conn., on Monday after six months and 34,000 miles cruised throughout Europe and the Middle East. Port calls included Bahrain, Portugal, Spain and Diego Garcia.

The submarine was commissioned in 1981 as the seventh of 61 Los Angeles-class attack submarines, the first to be modified with a dry-deck shelter, designed to support special operations missions from the late-1990s on.

Dallas has deployed to every operational theater, circumnavigating the globe and passing through the Panama Canal in 1984. It later supported operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

Two Dallas sailors became fathers since May and will meet their babies for the first time on the pier, according to a Friday news release from Submarine Group 2.
