ANCHORAGE, Alaska A soldier based in Anchorage has been awarded a medal for heroism.
Alaska Public Radio Network reports Sgt. 1st Class John Kerns of Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson on Thursday was awarded the Soldier’s Medal, the highest military heroism honor in a non-war setting, for pulling a man from a burning car.
Kerns is paratrooper with the 4th Infantry Brigade combat team, 25th Infantry Division.
He was driving on Interstate 95 near the Virginia-South Carolina border in 2011 when he saw a car veer into trees and roll.
The doors were locked but glass was broken from windows.
Kerns says he had to cut off the driver’s seat belt and pull him into the back of the car to get him out.
The car exploded afterward.
