The 2014 Andrews Air Show has been canceled, and it’s unclear when — or if — it will ever return.

The budget-driven cancellation of the show, also called the Joint Service Open House, came after the Defense Department in October ordered a 45 percent reduction in community outreach activities to save $1 billion over the next decade.

“We will miss the interaction that JSOH allowed us to have with our friends in the community, but this decision will save more than $2 million in tax dollars,” said Col. Bill Knight, commander of the 11th Wing at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland. “We are in the process of adjusting our strategies to ensure we have a robust outreach program within our local community to show them how important they are to us, because without their support, we would not be able to get our missions accomplished.”

The air show was last held in 2012, at a cost of $2.1 million. After that show, said spokeswoman Capt. Lindy Singleton, Andrews decided to switch from holding the event ever year to every other year, meaning one was not held in 2013. The next show would have been held in May 2014.

“The decision was not easy,” Singleton said.

Singleton said she was not sure when Andrews might hold its air show again, and said the base is waiting for further guidance from the Air Force on budgetary matters.

When asked if it is possible the air show might never return, Singleton said she would not speculate.

“Who knows what will happen in the next fiscal years,” Singleton said. “We’re taking it year by year.”
