Academy: Suspected trash-can fire-starter no longer enrolled

A midshipman suspected of setting a series of trash-can fires in campus bathrooms is no longer attending the Naval Academy, a school spokesman said Thursday.

A total of 11 small fires broke out in men’s bathrooms around campus Sept. 9-23.

“A midshipman suspect was apprehended Sept. 24 and is no longer enrolled at USNA,” academy spokesman John Schofield told Navy Times. He did not say whether the mid was expelled or left voluntarily.

He would not reveal the mid’s identity, citing the Privacy Act.

Though the academy said the fires were contained quickly and caused minimal damage, rumors of the small blazes spread across campus and onto a Facebook page specifically for parents of midshipmen.

In screenshots of the unofficial Facebook page, provided to Navy Times in September, posts show members discussing the incidents and providing details they say they received from their mids.

“Someone is apparently lighting paper towels in the bathrooms,” wrote one individual. “Special protective watches are being stood.”

Some parents were reporting that the academy was on a terror alert, but Schofield said in September that the rumors were “completely false.”
