10 percent unemployment in October for Post-9/11 veterans

There was no pre-Veterans Day employment miracle for former service members looking for work, as the economy created only 204,000 new jobs in October. As well, 448,000 people reported being temporarily laid off.

For Post-9/11 era veterans, the October jobless rate is 10 percent, a very slight improvement over the 10.1 percent recorded for September by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. For men of the Iraq and Afghanistan generation, the employment rate was 9.6 percent in October. For women, the jobless rate was 11.6 percent.

For veterans of all generations, the employment rate climbed from 6.5 percent in September to 6.9 percent in October, according to the monthly employment report. This is still under the 7.3 percent national unemployment rate, continuing a trend where veterans tend to do better, overall, than non-veterans.

Overall, the nation has 11.3 million people unemployed with 4.1 million out of work for 27 weeks or longer.

The Labor Department report estimates there are 750,000 unemployed veterans, including 246,000 from the Post-9/11 era.

One reason why veterans may be having employment problems is that the federal government — long a major employer for veterans — is cutting jobs. In October, not counting furloughs, federal employment dropped by 12,000 jobs, according to the report. Over the previous 12 months, the federal government has shed 94,000 jobs.
