Shutdown suspends CFC in continental U.S.

Defense officials have suspended their Combined Federal Campaign activities in the continental U.S. because of the government shutdown, a spokesman confirmed.

“Upon legal review, these activities are not excepted from furlough nor are they appropriate activities under the Pay Our Military Act,” wrote DoD CFC director Susan Yarwood in an Oct. 9 DoD memo.

Until the government reaches an agreement on the budget, campaign officials are directed to postpone all CFC events, training and fundraising activities, she wrote. Employees can still initiate pledges through myPay in jurisdictions that have been previously approved for that online capability.

Local CFC officials hold their campaigns at various times between Sept. 1 and Dec. 15. The campaign is not suspended at overseas locations because of the way undesignated funds are distributed, a defense official said. When a donor overseas doesn’t designate a specific charity for his or her donation, those funds go directly to support programs for troops and families. Under the Pay Our Military Act, funding continues for civilians and contractors whose work supports active-duty troops.

In the continental U.S., undesignated donations are split between all participating CFC charities.

“We look forward to a quick return and the resumption of a vigorous campaign to help those people who rely upon local, national and international charities,” Yarwood wrote.
