WASHINGTON — After a quiet August, U.S. forces saw a September uptick in air strikes in Afghanistan.

American air forces saw 232 weapons releases in Afghanistan in September, according to the monthly Combined Forces Air Component Commander Airpower statistics put out by US Air Forces Central Command.

That total rose from 158 strikes in August, which represented the lowest monthly level of strikes in more than a year.

However, the 232 strikes still represent the lowest September total in the last five years, as U.S. forces continue to draw down military efforts in the Afghan region.

Through the first nine months of 2013, 1,191 of the 17,029 sorties flown in Afghanistan this year saw at least one weapons release.
